The Militarization of the Prison System
The appointment of retired Army General Mark S. Inch to head the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) may be a cause for concern. From 2008-2009 Inch was overseeing detention facilities in Baghdad during “Operation Iraqi Freedom.” In 2013-2014 Inch was in charge of detention operations in Afghanistan.
Both tours of duty were plagued by accusations of torture and abuse. Inch oversaw operations at the Parwan Detention Facility formerly Bagram Prison. Detainees interviewed by UN investigators reported incidents of mistreatment including abuse, torture, beatings and electrocution resulting in the death of some inmates.
Considering General Inch’s past record it is not surprising that some are concerned that his appointment may lead to worsening conditions in the BOP.
